John Hamilton Construction provides homeowners in Upper Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula with affordable, comfortable, and sustainable living solutions. We partner with Dave Bach Designs to offer our clients a complete design+build package. Since 1979, Dave has specialized in highly energy-efficient projects designed for Michigan's snowy cold climate. We are fully licensed and insured to provide contracting services in Michigan.
John started the company in 2003 because he saw a need in the Keweenaw for an integrated design+build approach focusing on energy efficient, affordable buildings. As the owner and project manager, John oversees all aspects of projects from the initial consultation to the final follow-up.
Dave brings four decades of experience designing and building energy efficient houses in cold climates. He's one of the foremost experts on passive solar design, green HVAC technologies and energy efficient construction methods in the region. We partner with Dave as needed through his design and consulting company Dave Bach Designs.

“We were immensely pleased with the quality of John's work, attention to detail, and attentiveness to our concerns and timeliness. He and his crew worked full work weeks and hours; we never had to worry that he wouldn't be at the work site keeping to the schedule.”

We are a design+build company which means we perform both the design and construction from a single source of accountability. This allows the architect/designer, contractor and homeowner to develop a cohesive project plan from the very beginning. We believe this yields a more creative, efficient and affordable solution for our clients in relation to the their budget and timeline.
Whether you're building new or improving your existing home we have the skills and experience to make your vision a reality:
“John worked with us on several projects including fixing up an old house and an energy efficient new building. In each project he has provided first rate work at a reasonable cost. He is easy to work with and completely reliable.”

We believe the corner stone of sustainable building is energy efficiency. To be efficient is, at bottom, to conserve. When it comes to house construction, conservation means choosing durable materials and assembling these materials with processes that will assure their integrity. Sealing, insulating, and proper ventilation are key. These elements taken together with good design make for a good house.
We prefer to use renewable and regional materials whenever possible. Natural and non-toxic paints and finishes make these materials easier to reuse and recycle. Every effort is made to minimize construction and demolition debris from entering the landfill.
“This was a remodel that had an agenda but no formal plans. Many ideas came and changed as the project moved forward. Good communication, pride in work, and great team work lead to a finished project that our family is very proud of! John and his crew were punctual, professional, and courteous. A rare combination — Kudos!”
